Hallam's 'View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages' surveyed the political development of the principal west European countries, paying particular attention to England's Anglo-Saxon and Norman constitutions. Described by the author himself as a series of historical dissertations, the text approaches the period from the 5th to the 15th century by separating the age into nine chapters. Five chapters cover the histories of France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and of the Greek and Saracenic empires, whilst other sections deal with major institutional features of medieval society, such as the feudal system, the ecclesiastical system, and the political system of England. The last chapter of the work sketches society, commerce, manners, and literature in the Middle Ages. CONDITION In the original publisher's paper covered boards.
