Description: There is no staining at the right end (scanner effect, not in the paper) Historic 180+ year Financial Find As U.S. Treasurer under Abraham Lincoln, Francis Elias Spinner oversaw the creation and circulation of Fractional Currency which is every bit as rare, historic and beautiful as U.S. Large Currency, only smaller. Fractional Currency became necessary due to metal shortages and coin hoarding during the Civil War. Before achieving the vaulted position of U.S. Treasurer and Lincoln's financial czar, Spinner was the Cashier of the Mohawk Valley Bank. This is a very scarce jumbo sized bank draft that he hand signed in that capacity. Issued in 1840, it was payable to J.R. Noyes, teller of the American Exchange Bank in NYC who signed it on the bank. 3-4 other signatures appear on the back including one of Corbett & Co. (affiliated with Henry W. Corbett, the Portland Oregon tycoon). Superb engraving by Danforth & Hufty, predecessor of American Bank Note, includes a farmer plowing with 2 horses and a magnificent portrait of Daniel Boone who died just 20 years earlier. Excellent overall condition with minor traces of use, chiefly in the form of tiny ink burn holes. Living American history with a very important autograph!
