1856 Alabama Currency – The Central Bank of Alabama – Montgomery - 5396

Description: Original hand signed “Two Dollars” note issued by “The Central Bank of Alabama” from Montgomery, Alabama. The hand inscribed serial number “2767” is legible. The note was issued in 1856 and engraved by “Danforth, Wright & Co. New York & Philad.”. Prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, the Federal government had issued currency only on a sporadic basis, choosing instead to rely on specie (gold and silver) to circulate as a median of exchange. Local banking institutions, to help alleviate periodic shortages of specie and to facilitate commerce, issued various types of paper money to be redeemed for coins at a later date. The success of these issues varied, with some institutions redeeming the majority of their currency, while others closed their doors and left their customers holding worthless pieces of paper. Private notes like this were still in use during the Civil War. The note will be shipped in a protective sleeve with a dated, hand signed Letter of Authenticity with a photograph of the currency above. All of the artifacts on our site are guaranteed to be original Civil War issue or as stated. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
