Description: Here's a 1" brass or bronze token or medal with a silver finish showing the men who received the 1884 republican party's presidential nominations, James G. Blaine and his running-mate, John Logan. The first, national republican ticket to lose since 1860, (hence the slogan on back), they blew it at the end by not repudiating what one supporter had said about democrats being the party of "rum, Romanism and rebellion", thereby angering many Irish Catholic voters so they failed to carry New York state. That's where their opponent, Grover Cleveland was governor, anyway. If you think politics is bad now, when he ran for president, Cleveland's opponents sang, "Ma, Ma, where's my Pa? Off to the White House, Haw, Haw, Haw." That's because bachelor Grover supposedly had fathered a child out of wedlock and kept that fact under wraps. Now things like that are accepted. Cleveland's supporters used to sing; "James G. Blaine, James G. Blaine. The Con-tin-en-tal liar from the State of Maine." That was back when being a proverbial liar was considered a bad thing in politics -pre-Bill Clinton - and now it's accepted. We've come a long way, baby. Logan was a Civil War general who helped establish the veteran's organization, G.A.R. Perhaps that's why a civil war union shield appears on the back side of this token.
