Description: FROM THE PAPERS OF G.W. TERRY OF LIMA NY (METHODIST PREACHER & NEWSPAPER EDITOR) - James H. Corrigan was the fourth President of Seton Hall College (now Seton Hall University). He was born June 29, 1844 in Newark, New Jersey to Thomas and Mary (English) Corrigan; he was one of nine children. His parents emigrated from Ireland in the 1820s, and his father worked in the grocer business and real estate. Corrigan attended Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, MD and then went on to the American College in Rome for theological studies.He was ordained at Seton Hall College, October 20, 1867. He served as President of Seton Hall from June 1876 until 1888 when he retired from ill health. Under Corrigan's leadership the Seton Hall Alumni Association was organized and grew rapidly. The Association helped raise funds for the building of Alumni Hall which was completed in 1884. In 1886 another fire struck the Seton Hall community when the College building was destroyed; however no one was injured in the fire.
