Description: Reading Terminal Market is an enclosed public market located at 12th and Arch Streets in Center City Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It opened originally in 1893 under the elevated train shed of the "Reading Railroad Company", after the city of Philadelphia advocated moving public markets from the streets into indoor facilities for both safety and sanitary reasons. Open-air markets have flourished in Philadelphia since its founding. The growth of the city demanded more markets and the string of open-air markets extended from the Delaware River ran for six blocks, or one full mile, prompting Main Street (then called “High Street” to be renamed to “Market Street”. The Reading Terminal building was designed in the “Italian Renaissance” style featuring three sections: the “head house” an eight-story structure), the balloon train shed and the underground market. This card, published by “United News Co.”, chronicles the “Reading Terminal” long after the building was built, and the market established but it was before the trains moved from the building to a new underground “Market East Station”. Today, Reading Terminal Market building is a multi-use building that includes hotel space, shopping, restaurants, meeting rooms and of course the Reading Market. americanrails, wikipedia The card is in very good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image that looks to be c 1940s. It is a rare card in that it has a “Reading Terminal Market” sign with yellow printing (that scans red) that is on the flat corner of the building, five stories up. There are many cards with the same image, but I found only 1 other with the yellow sign. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
