Description: 1910Original Antique Rand-McNally Map British Indiawith insert maps ofLower Burma & Straits SettlementsIn 1910, British India covered about 54% of the area of India and was home to more than 77% of its population. The British Raj, as it was known, extended across much of what is now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The British government was made up of British officials, led by a viceroy and his appointed council. Each province had its own governor, assisted by a provincial legislative council. Here are some other facts about British India in 1910: Laws The Press Act of 1910 gave the government the power to imprison journalists without trial and censor the press. Recruitment The British used selective recruitment policies to exclude Indian castes and ethnic groups that were previously disloyal from the armed forces. Reforms Lord Morley and the fourth Earl of Minto worked closely together on issues such as the Anglo-Russian Entente of 1907 and the selection of the next viceroy of India. This period of collaboration is known as the "Morley–Minto Reforms". India gained independence from British rule in 1947, when it was partitioned into the Dominions of India and Pakistan.Page:10.2" x 13.5"Map: 9.2 x 12.5" Family Atlas of the WorldRand, McNally & Company, Publishers Chicago - New York1912 (Atlas cover and title page not a part of the Sale)
