1910 T218 Champions Jack Johnson Pair Front SGC 4 Side SGC 5 Tougher Factory 30!

Description: This is a very nice fairly evenly-matched pair of Jack Johnson cards, the undisputed keys to the 1910 T218 Champion Athletes and Prize Fighters set from American Tobacco. This 153-subject set was issued with Mecca, Hassan and Tolstoi (scarce) advertising backs. This pair are the Mecca version. The cards were issued with two different factories noted on the bottom reverse, Factory 30 and Factory 649. While so far SCG (and PSA) have not noted these differences on their labels as they do with the T206 baseball and a few other tobacco sets, these differences are important to some collectors. eBay listing and sales history reveals the Factory 30 backs are available in lesser numbers than Factory 649 in the Mecca back. Current listings as of 3/25/24 show: 13 front view Factory 649 to 4 Factory 3017 side view Factory 649 to 3 Factory 30 The discrepancy is not as great on the sold side, which tells me that of those that are buying, there is greater demand for what there is lesser of. Sold listings going back 90 days: 8 front view Factory 649 to 3 Factory 302 side view Factory 649 to 2 Factory 30 The side view here is certified by SGC as EX 5 (60 in the old holder), and the front view as VG-EX 4 (50 in the old holder). These will make great additions to any boxing collection. They capture the great heavyweight champion in the prime of his career, while he was champion. He took the title in Australia in 1908 from Tommy Burns. His record as shown on the cards' reverses does not show his victory over James Jeffries in 'The Fight of the Century' on the 4th of July, 1910. Insured shipping is free in the US
