Mount Etna - Sicily. Catania, Sicily. Mount Etna, at once the pride and curse of Sicily, began throwing out flames and lava at dawn today, igniting the flame of panic in the hearts of those residents of nearby communities who have been through the eruptions of the volcano before. When dormant, or merely smoking, the volcano is a beautiful sight to behold. The photo was top left was made in 1947 when Etna was sending out plumes of smoke - a threat that came to nothing. At lower left, the wave of lava that marched inexorably down the mountain, burying all in its path in 1929. Top right, what happened when the lava tide reached buildings that stood in its path. Lower right, snow-capped Etna as it appeared this summer, beautiful as a bride, its outward tranquility giving no sign of the hell raging beneath. Today Sicilian Police and troops rushed to threatened areas ready to evacuate populations if the eruptions grows worse.Photo measures 7.25 x 9.25inches. Photo is dated 12-2-1939.
