Smiley, of Brown University, left, and a Brown student, Arthur A. Hoag, of Barrington, Rhode Island, are pictured with this unique instrument, known as a Schwarzchild camera, which they'll take with them on an expedition to Quixeramobim, Brazil, where they'll photograph the total eclipse of the sun on October 1st, 1940. This is the first camera of its kind ever to be used for eclipse photography. Professor Smiley hopes to get pictures of the zodiacal light around the sun during the eclipse. Astronomers have been unable to catch the zodiacal light with other types of camerasPhoto measures 6.5 x 8.75inches. Photo is dated 08-25-1940.
