Description: 1943 WW II headline display newspaper US FORCES CAPTURE PALERMO Sicily in ITALY - inv # 2H-413 SEE PHOTO----- COMPLETE, ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER, the Kingston Freeman (NY) dated July 23, 1943. This newspaper contains a bold banner headline and long report on the CAPTURE of PALERMO, Sicily (ITALY) by American military forces in WW II. The Allied invasion of Sicily, code named Operation Husky, was a major World War II campaign, in which the Allies took Sicily from the Axis Powers (Italy and Nazi Germany). It was a large scale amphibious and airborne operation, followed by six weeks of land combat. It launched the Italian Campaign. Husky began on the night of 9–10 July 1943, and ended on 17 August. Strategically, Husky achieved the goals set out for it by Allied planners; the Allies drove Axis air, land and naval forces from the island and the Mediterranean's sea lanes were opened. As a result of the invasion, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was toppled from power in Italy. It opened the way for the invasion of Italy. During World War II, Palermo was untouched until the Allies began to advance up Italy after the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943. In July, the harbour and the surrounding quarters were heavily bombed by the allied forces and were all but destroyed. Very good condition. This listing includes the complete entire original newspaper, NOT just a clipping or a page of it. STEPHEN A.
