Description: Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. Jewish Community Center - Houston. Alms boxes are as common in Jewish homes today as they have always been. Coins re dropped in the boxes when good things happen to family members or when there's a special need. When the boxes are full, the contents are donated to charity. Coins were dropped in the chimney of the stoneware alms box at left, and the roof lifted off when it was full. The leather and brass box, center, made to look like a book is from pre-World War II Germany. At right, a Dutch alms box, circa 1900. Photo measures 10 x 8 inches. Photo is dated 09-21-1981.
