In a countrywhere the beat never stops, they occupy a vital role. They sitcross-legged, surrounded by an array of instruments—prettymuch any object that can be beaten, twanged, gonged orshaken. Junior Homrich has taken this tradition beyond itslimits. His studies of Amazonian Indian music have addedmany instruments to his repertoire—rain sticks, seed-shakers, clay pots and a range of flutes.Junior was with us all through the shooting of The EmeraldForest With hisbagof music on hisbackhebrought his sounds.into the heart of the jungle. He answered the calls of birdsandinsects, and their sounds became his. After the shooting, hismusic haunted my memory and I decided to ask him tocompose the score for the picture. We spent seven marvelousweeks in a recording studio in London, as he over-dubbedinstrumentafterinstrumentbuildingupthecomplexrhythmicscore you hear on this album. Occasionally, another brilliantpercussionist, Joao Bosco, came in to tap tablas with him.Brian Gascoigne provided the haunting eagle theme on hisfairlite, and played marimbas. Perhaps the most astonishinginstrument Junior plays is his own body; beating his head, cheeks, neck, and chest he produces a range of notes andsounds that I feel are deeply moving.Junior’s grandmother was a full-blooded Indian, and his workhere is dedicated to her memory.—John Boorman Thank you for your business.
