Description: 19th C. Albumem Photograph The New York Elevated Railroad Baldwin Locomotive Works This listing is for one of over a hundred antique 19th century albumem photographs of locomotives that we will be listing. All of these photographs are from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia PA. They range in date from 1870 to 1889. All of these albumem prints are originals and not later copies or reprints. The appear to have been part of the files or records at Baldwin as a few have staple holes and/or emobossed stamps reading "BALDWIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS, BURNHAM, PARRY, WILLIAMS & CO. PHILADELPHIA PA." We believe we have identified all but 7 of the locomotives. We were able to locate the original glass negatives for the vast majority in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. In the instances that we were unable to locate the negative we utilized the records held by the DeGolyer Library collection at the Southern Methodist University. Further research, or more knoweldge in the field, may help identify the remainder. These photos are the type used on cabinet cards, "builder cards" and in Baldwins catalogues. In fact, there are several examples in this collection that are the exact images used in the "Baldwin Locomotive Works : Illustrated Catalogue of Locomotives - Burnham, Parry, Williams & Co., Philadelphia 1881". It is interesting to note that the main difference in style between the photos used in the 1881 catalogue and the one from a decade earlier is the removal of the background from around the locomotives. If you look carefully at this collection you can see the bricks and/or windows of the plant building thru the windows of many of the locomotives that were not removed. This is true of many of the photos in the 1881 catalogue as well Albumem photographic prints are known for their exceptional detail and these examples are no exception. None of these photographs are mounted or have a backing of any kind. Because they were made using the Albumen process they are very thin and therefor more fragile than later photo prints. We have layed them on acid free card stock and placed them in acid free sheet protectors. However proper archival storage or proper mounting on appropriate materials would better preserve them for the future. DESCRIPTION: 19th C.
