Levon "Fred" Agabashian was a Northern California race car driver who mainly raced Midgets and Indy cars in the 1940's and 50's. He was well known for his ability to diagnose and set up race cars as a test driver long before he qualified in Pole Position for the 1952 Indy 500 and he also won the Bay Cities Racing Association Championship from 1946-48. He called the Indy 500 on the radio during the 1960's and 70's and also served as a spokesman for Champion spark plugs. This rare completely original Universal Geneve Compax chronograph watch was presented to Fred Agabashian for his role in one of racing's biggest upsets by winning the pole for the 1952 Indianapolis 500 with a revolutionary Kurtis Kraft Cummins Diesel-powered car...the very first turbocharged race car in Indy 500 history! The rare Gruen Chrono Timer 450 watch was presented to Fred Agabashian by Nash Motors Company for finishing 9th in the 1947 Indy 500. He started 23rd in the race which was marred by the ASPAR drivers union controversy and the death of Shorty Cantlon on lap 40. In 1947, Fred Agabashian won the BCRA championship for George Bignotti and was awarded this Gold Bulova 15 jewel Calibre 10AK manual wind watch by Illustrated Speedway News as the Western Leader for the King Doodlebug contest. Doodlebug was a popular term for midget cars and he was at his peak in the BCRA at the time having won both the 1947 and 1948 championships.
