Description: A collectible copy of an early printing of the sixth book in the Tom Swift series with the 1911 copyright date. The dating of this printing can be established by examining and comparing the listings of the various G&D series in the advertisements in the text and on the front and rear sides of the dust jacket. There are seven series that show up in the text advertisements and on the dust jacket. Five of the listings are the same with the last book listed having been published in 1924 or 1925. Two of the listings are different. The two Tom Swift listings on the dust jacket end with number 28 (… His Chest of Secrets), published in 1925 but the listing in the advertisement adds number 29 (… His Airline Express), published in 1926. The Outdoor Girls listing in the text ends with number 14 (… on Cape Cod), published in 1924 but the dust jacket listing adds number 15 (… at Foaming Falls), published in 1925. The next book in that series was published in 1926. Based on those differences it appears this book was printed in either late 1925 or early 1926. Very Good hardcover in original Tan #2 cloth with red and black quadrant illustrations on the front cover and 55 dot oval on the spine. All of the printing is bright and unworn having been protected by the dust jacket. The top corners are only slightly blent; bottom corners are straight; the bottom front cover is worn to the board at the tip. The original dust jacket is in Good-Plus condition and includes the listings for 24 G&D series on the reverse of the jacket. There are chips at the head and foot of the folds for the front and rear flaps; the front also has some surfact loss along the fold. There are three closed tears at the top of the front panel and a large chip at the bottom affecting the "B" in "By." The spine is darkened from exposure and the red text has almost completely faded. It has Tom in his soft motorcycle cap, sports coat and striped tie. There are chips at the head and foot of the spine, the largest at the head of the front fold. There is a small chip in the margin of the bottom edge of teh rear panel and a tear in the upper left corner creating a flap that is holding. The dust jacket is now in a clear archival Brodart sleeve to protect it from any further damage. The text block is tight and unmarked; the pages are a bit tanned from age but the paper quality is good. Following the "That Isn't All" page at the rear of the text are seven pages listing books in the Tom Swift and other G&D series. Previous owner's signature in ink on the free front endpaper along with a previous seller's price in pencil.
