List price: $3.00 A prominent philanthropist, Abigail Greene (Aldrich) Rockefeller (1874-1978) was the daughter of Senator Nelson Wilmarth Aldrich and Abigail Pearce Truman Chapman, and the spouse of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The author, Mary Ellen Chase (1887–1973), was an American educator, scholar, and author, primarily known for her works of regional New England fiction. Born in Blue Hill, Maine, her upbringing in a small coastal town deeply influenced her writing. In addition to her writing, Chase had a distinguished academic career, serving on the faculty of Smith College for many years. This book was part of a collection found in Osterville, Massachusetts. Inscriptions across the books indicate Arthur Clifford Havlin was a previous owner of the collection. Arthur Clifford Havlin (1895-1976), was a 3rd cousin once removed of Mary Ellen Chase. Found in the book: A vintage newspaper article concerning the razing of "Eyrie," a home of John D. Rockefeller in Seal Harbor, Maine, and a card stating "Compliments of the Author" Edition: First edition, first printing. Title page states 1950. Copyright page states: "Copyright, 1950, by Mary Ellen Chase. Condition: Book is in very good condition in a good dust jacket. Binding and page block are square and tight. Cover is unusually bright with sharp corners. The front-facing endpaper is stained from where the article has been over the decades. Pages are toned with age. There is the beginning of a separation at the front endpapers. Dust jacket hass edge wear, rubbing, and small chips to the top of spine and corners. Please review all photos.
