The type one ribbon was in use for a short period of time (dates unknown), but medals using this ribbon are in circulation. The Selective Service System (SSS) medals were authorized in October 1971 and consisted of a Distinguished Service Medal (gold), Exceptional Service Medal (silver) and a Meritorious Service Medal (bronze). From 1971 through the late 70's, the medals were encased in a block of Lucite, and were not wearable. In the early 80's, all the military services adopted regulations authorizing the wear of the Selective Service medals on the uniform as a non-military award.
