Description: Ancient Rome Emperor Gordian III AR Antoninianus Rome Mint 239-240AD. Gordian III would take the throne at a very young age being barely a teenager. The year 238 AD, or as many know it "The year of the five emperors" was a tumultuous year for Rome. In the year 238AD, a group of landowners grew tired of high taxes imposed by the current Emperor Maximinus. They would proclaim the elderly Gordian I as emperor. The revolt was soon suppressed by the local governor Numidia. The senate would use this revolt as a reason to get rid of Maximinus by recognizing Gordian as emperor. Upon his death, they would proclaim two new emperors Pupienus and Balbimus. As Maximinus descended on Rome to stop the revolt, his army was halted. Tired of his leadership the emperor was murdered by his own troops. The troops in Rome would kill Pupienus and Balbimus recognizing Gordian III as emperor. Gordian would rule the empire from 238-244AD. Obverse: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG; radiate, draped bust right./Reverse: ROMAE AETERNAE; Roma seated left on cuirass, holding victory and sceptre.
