Description: Please visit our eBay store for a complete list of in-stock Civil War relics organized by recovery location. We are working as partners in conjunction with Gettysburg Relics to offer some very nice American Civil War relics for sale. The owner of Gettysburg Relics was the proprietor of Artifact at 777 on Cemetery Hill in Gettysburg for a number of years, and we are now selling on eBay. THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM / RECOVERED IN THE AREA OF DUNKER CHURCH - A pair of interesting early Tombac (or Tombak) buttons, common from the 18th century to the early 19th century, were probably already in the ground when the Battle of Antietam took place. One 15mm cuff size button with the shank intact, and one 18mm vest or coat size button with the shank broken away. Tombac is an alloy of copper and zinc, which originally would have had a pale yellow-white color. These one-piece metal buttons, common from the 18th century to the early 19th century, which are often referred to as flat disc buttons were made of copper alloys and some with the shank of the button made of wire and inserted into the mold as the button was cast. These buttons were was found by a relative of the landowner on land immediately adjacent to the Dunker Church at Antietam in the late 1960s. At the time, the land was privately owned but today it is within the boundaries of the National Park. The Dunker Church is, perhaps, the most famous building on the Antietam battlefield and was at the heart of the morning's fight. Many of the relics in this grouping are buttons and other brass items. I acquired these artifacts more than a decade ago, but they have been stored away until we rediscovered the grouping. A provenance letter will be included. We include as much documentation with the relics as we possess. This includes copies of tags if there are original identification tags or maps, as well as a signed letter of provenance with the specific recovery information. All of the collections that we are offering for sale are guaranteed to be authentic, and are either older recoveries, found before the 1960s when it was still legal to metal detect battlefields, or were recovered on private property with permission. Some land on Battlefields that is now Federally owned, or owned by the Trust, was acquired after the items were recovered. We will not sell any items that were recovered illegally, nor will we sell any items that we suspect were recovered illegally. Thank you for viewing!
