Description: Antique 19th Century Japanese Bronze Horse & Samurai Rider Statue Sculpture Meiji Era. Information about it. Rare and extraordinary Meiji period (late 19th century) dark patina bronze sculpture depicting a proud Samurai riding his horse. The exquisite and striking sculpture depicts the horse walking with its front leg raised and head turned to the left guided by the reins, which the Samurai holds in his left hand while, in his right hand, he holds a whip-still original-to simulate bamboo, which can be slipped off. The Samurais expression is firm and energetic, the robes are windswept and finely depicted with relief details. He wears the typical armor protecting the torso, the D () decorated with a dragon in relief and the shoulder straps hooked over the armor protecting the arms and shoulders the Sode (). The robes and petticoats are decorated with the Mon (same nobility) of the lineage to which it appertains. He also wears Ori-Eboshi-type headgear (). This folded headgear became the standard for the Samurai. For this reason he was also called samurai-eboshi. Once folded, the Ori-Eboshi was lacquered so as to retain its shape. The horse is well-proportioned and the muzzle is well depicted, and the mane is thick and finely etched. Signed under the belly of the horse Shzan .
