Description: #2283. These “False Sleeves” as they were called are very hard to find especially in never used condition. Whitework Broderie Anglaise Handworked on a very fine lawn. These sleeves would have been attached to a dress or blouse and could then be removed for hand washing if necessary. They are in incredible condition for their age. I purchased them from a Chicago Area Estate sale about 20 years ago. These were probably worked in France or England. The sleeves are 14” long overall with the widest part that would be attached to the garment measuring 9”. The cuff measures approx. 5” to the band with the band measuring 1” and the circumference of the band measuring approx.9” around. The workmanship is exceptional. Tiny Leaves around the band with the tiniest of eyelets above and below the embroidered design. The cuff itself has a scalloped edge worked in buttonhole stitch with accents of sprigs of flowers as well as eyelets. There are a few tiny areas of separation on the edge where the lawn meets the scalloped edge. (See pics) I don’t believe these tiny areas detract from the beauty of the sleeves. After all these are at least 100 years old. They are finished on the inside with hand sewn French Seams. The lawn is very fine and in remarkable condition for the age. It appears that these were purchased in Europe and then brought home, but never used. I actually found quite a few pieces at that Estate Sale that were never used.
