Ming Dynasty 16th/17th C. Western Xinjiang Province of China Description: A magnificent and important 16th to 17th century auspicious Chinese mythological animal figure of recumbent Dogs, carved in the round from a single block of richly toned mottled Celadon Jade stone, accented by caramel to brown colored veins, and a naturally age patina. xxx Archaic in style the sculpture depicts a recumbent dog with its head turned to the left with its affectionate puppy, both postured relaxed with four paws resting flat to the ground, slightly arched back divided by a ridged spine, intricately incised, and ornamented with well carved ears and scrolled tail. A highly detailed face is rendered with a benevolent expression, impacted by eyes bulging in emotion, set beneath arched eyebrows, pronounced nose, and a wide gaping mouth. The posture gives the animal strength and substance, emphasised by strongly delineated lines, and accented by a swirled motif.xxxThe stone carving is a remarkable feat of Chinese artistry, achieving the astonishing combination of grace, strength, and magesty, masterfully created and believed to be of Imperial origin. From Ming times, Buddhistic Lion, Dog, and Mythological Beasts are a classic theme in Chinese art and culture, introduced through Buddhism as powerful mythical symbols of good fortune and defenders of law and protectors of sacred buildings, fending off demons and evil spirits. They were presented as guardian figures flanking the entrances of temples, imperial palaces, and emperors tombs, relating to the 'Lamaistic' concept that Buddha, upon entering his temple, ordered the beast which accompanied him, to seat themselves and await his return in motionless obedience.
