Antique Double Weave Coverlet Wool Indigo/Natural 1800s Center Seam Pine Trees

Description: Absolutely STUNNING antique (1830s to 1880s) double weave (wool/cotton) loom-woven coverlet/blanket in vibrant indigo blue and ivory. Reversible. Center seam: looms were only so wide, so 2 pieces were sewn together in a center seam to create bed-size coverlets. Bed linens were prized, and the most-valuable possessions back in the 1800s. Some coverlets took up to 2 years to make. Pattern represents pine trees and snow. Vibrant, with no fading. Navy and cream areas are wool, dyed with indigo for blue, and left natural for cream. Cochineal-dyed cotton underweave. Approx 83" long x 85" wide (not including fringe). There is dyed cotton fringe on 2 sides. Center seam construction, with hand-sewn seam more visible on ivory side. This coverlet has been stored by a family for many years, with the blanket coming originally from New York state, then on to Chicago. It was stored in a cedar trunk, and had an "old" odor, as well as a few faint stains. I took the risk, and wool washed the coverlet, dried flat, and it came out in BEAUTIFUL condition. I am not a fan of chemical-laden dry cleaning of bed linens. Of note: the cochineal dye used on the cotton bled a bit onto the fringe. There are a few areas of very faint pink on the cream side--nothing significant. Please see pics. Coverlet is ready to use, and you can be assured of it's strength, having gone through a soak and wash so beautifully. AMAZING piece of history, appropriate for use, not just display.
