It could either hold 2 photos inside, or a lock of hair, which is exactly what they used to do at the turn of the last century: 1899-1900. Most of this item's value comes from its age. I tested it with my very inexpensive gold testing kit from online. It doesn't seem to be gold. And it's not marked with an karats that I can find--yet the design is just ASKING for an initial or monogram to be etched into it, if you ask me. And I really don't think that anyone would make a locket like this in brass. I suppose I don't know any jewelers from the late 1800s. One more thing: There are no frames to lock any photos in place, so you'd have to glue or stick them in some other way. I don't think this locket ever had frames. Please look at all the photos and read everything I've written about the condition and description of this item.
