Description: Antique Late Victorian Edinburgh City Police Keys Box # 15 Click image to enlarge Description One of two Edinburgh City Police Keys boxes listed, the other numbered 29 (please see other listings) A scarce late Victorian / Edwardian Edinburgh City Police wooden keys box of rectangular form, the hinged lid opened via a brass push button catch, and the front with a small brass knob handle and it's original metal 'Keys Box Edinburgh Police' plaque numbered 15. These boxes were used during the late 19th / early 20th century by Edinburgh City Police. The boxes were kept at police stations where local businesses could pay the police an annual fee for the overnight safekeeping of their shop / business keys : when the keys were handed over, a numbered token was given as a reciept with the token number corresponding to the number of the box used. Size : Approx 9" long x 3" wide x 2 1/2" tall Condition : Original unrestored condition with expected marks / wear commensurate with age and use, extensive loss of finish all over with bumping and a couple of minor losses, the plaque screws look to be later replacements - please see all 17 photos below (message me if you require additional photos / info, etc).
