This beautiful c1880 Victorian photo locket is ornately engraved on both the front and back sides and decorated with black and turquoise blue enamel on the front, representing the jewelry technique of taille d’epargné. The front and back sides are engraved differently. The intricate designs, especially on the front, are fabulous. Taille d’epargné, sometimes referred to as black enamel tracery, literally translates from the French as “saving cut.” It is a variation of champlevé whereby engraved lines forming a design are incised into the metal and filled with opaque enamel--usually black. This thick oval locket opens by using two tiny protruding buttons that are pulled in opposite directions. Two photos may be placed on the inside. It still has one frame and photo covering, which I believe is glass, and one original photo. Condition: Excellent--no dents, excellent enamel, snaps shut, gold covering of original ring bail is worn (which makes sense since it was always been rubbed through the top loop and from wearing on a chain) Approximate measurements: 5/8" wide by 1 1/8" long including top loop but not bail Shipping includes insurance. ****************************************Payment:Payment expected within two days of purchase.Shipping:Please be sure your shipping address on file with eBay is correct.
