Description: What Records put out the first Los Angeles punk record in 1977. It was the Germs “Forming” single. Chris Ashford, the owner of What Records, issued monthly royalty checks to Darby Crash, Pat Smear, and Lorna Doom for about a year. The checks are made out to their real names, which in Darby’s case is Jan Paul Beahm. Sometime around the year 2000, Chris was clearing out his old files, and came across these returned checks. He dispersed them to collectors, primarily through sales on eBay. I estimate that there are about 14 of these checks out there. This is one of them. I obtained it directly from Chris. Darby Crash had to sign the check over to his mom, Faith Baker, because he never had a bank account. How punk is that! Also interesting to note the amount. A merger 67 cents. In the big scheme of things, it doesn’t matter. What Darby gave to the world is priceless. So here it is, an authentic Darby Crash autograph.
