Wetmore" and "Robert C. Wetmore" written on title page; RWO. NOTES Robert Charles Wetmore was born in Pequannock, near Bridgeport, Connecticut, on December 12, 1799. He was educated at private schools in Bridgeport. In 1813 he entered the crockery business of his brother-in-law, George Treadwell, in New York City. In 1826, he organized Robert C. Wetmore & Co., with his brother, Prosper Montgomery Wetmore (1798-1876). He retired from the crockery business in 1849.Wetmore was also actively involved in politics, particularly the local Whig Party organization. He became chairman of the Young Men's Whig Committee of New York,, which provided him with an opportunity to make contacts with important party officials. These contacts eventually led to his appointment as Collector for the United States Navy at the Port of New York under President William Henry Harrison in 1841. He was removed from the position after the Whig Party lost the presidency in the 1844 election.Wetmore served in the New York Militia for many years, rising in rank to that of colonel. In later years he served on the staff of General Charles W. Sanford as division inspector. He married Adeline Geer, daughter of Seth Geer, a well-known architect. They had three children.
