BOILING SAP OLD FASHIONED SUGAR CAMP, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ATKINSON NEWS CO. 1915-30

Description: Maple syrup is made from the sap of Maple trees. In cold climates, these trees store starch in their trunks and roots before winter, the starch is then converted to sugar that rises in the sap in late winter and early spring. Maple trees are tapped by drilling holes into their trunks and collecting the sap, which is processed by heating to evaporate much of the water, leaving concentrated syrup. Maple syrup was first made by the Indigenous peoples of North America. The practice was adopted by European settlers, who gradually changed production methods. Virtually all the world’s maple syrup is produced in Canada and the United States. The syrup production farm is called a “sugarbush”, called a sugar camp on this card. The sap is often boiled in a “sugar house”, a building louvered at the top to vent the steam from the boiling sap. This iconic card, published by “The Atkinson News Co., Tilton N.H.”, chronicles “Boiling Sap in an Old-Fashioned Sugar Camp”. There is no Sugar Shack but has a large pot over a fire. The card, a white board era card “1915-30” and is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image. The reverse is also clean. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
