Description: Bronze Byzantine Cross C. 843-1204 Possibly worn by a Crusader Soldier. The chain is not original to this piece. Middle Byzantine Period circa 843-1204 Cross with the original patina. We do not know the type of stone it holds, although glass was so rare during this period, it was considered a gemstone. These rare pieces are judged by their patina and condition, and this is a superb classical example. No two artifacts are ever alike; the copper in the bronze reacts with ground minerals taking hundreds of years to achieve the unique green coating you see in the pictures. This Cross has absolutely no disintegration of the metal. REGION OF DISCOVERY-Balkans; found on the site of an ancient battle; suspected to have been worn by a Crusader Soldier. DIMENSIONS- 2.25 Inches by 1.75 inch with a weight of 20 grams of Bronze. PROVENANCE- Miami estate collection of a Franciscan Catholic Priest.
