Safety first:Carogna has been designed and tested to work perfectly on any rim material (aluminum, carbon), with any tubular (seamless, handmade, vulcanized, with flat base tape or with raised center seam), on the road and off-road. The adhesion is very strong and uniform across the entire circumference of the rim, and is also uniform across the entire width of the tape. A limitation of other gluing techniques is that adhesion is limited to the edges of the webbing, or to the center, depending on the shape of the tubular and rim. Carogna solves this problem with specific adhesive properties on the rim side and on the tubular side. The Carogna tape has a specific type of adhesive on each side:Semi-structural but removable on the rim side: adhesion is guaranteed by industrial acrylic glue. When you remove the tubular (breaking its bond with the rim), the acrylic glue will remain on the Carogna tape, not on the rim. Acrylic glue has reliable adhesion to aluminum and carbon. Permanent on the tubular side: a 1mm thick layer of high viscosity permanent glue (originally developed for underwater applications) plastically deforms and adapts to the shape of the base webbing when the tubular is inflated, ensuring an optimal contact surface for bonding. This glue bonds well to any type of webbing material (nylon, cotton, poly-cotton) or exterior finish (raw, brushed, or neoprene coated). Wide temperature resistance (during use):IMPORTANT: When gluing a tube with Carogna tape, the workshop temperature must be between 21°C and 38°C (70 to 100°F). At that temperature, 80% of the adhesive strength is achieved after 8 hours, 99% after 24 hours. Proper adhesion cannot occur at temperatures below 10°C/50°F. Once adhesion has occurred, using the tube at low temperatures (down to -40°C/-40°F) is not a problem. The heat resistance of all materials used in the production of Carogna was a high priority: Carogna guarantees perfect adhesion at 150°C (302°F) for long periods (hours), exceeding the heat resistance of even the best mastics. We recommend cleaning the surfaces (rims and tubular webbing) using isopropyl alcohol or white spirit. See the instruction sheet for detailed assembly information (click here). Turn a multi-day job into a five-minute one:Looking at the assembly video below, gluing a tube with Carogna tape takes five to ten minutes and is actually a simple operation, not one for “initiates” as in the case of mastic (which means applying multiple coats of liquid glue on the tube and rim, the times associated with drying, odors, drips, etc.). Due to its simplicity, gluing tubes with Carogna is an operation that even beginners can do. Time is also saved when the tubular (glued with Carogna) has been removed, as the tape leaves the rim ready for subsequent gluing, without further cleaning. Any traces of Carogna glue on the rim are very thin and can be left in place, and a tubular glued over them with new Carogna tape. A tubular glued with Carogna can also be re-glued: just slowly peel off the bulk of the Carogna tape, leaving the (permanent) Carogna glue on the tubular tape, and glue again with a new Carogna tape. Version: “L” (30 mm width) for super wide tubular rims and/or for Gravel (gluing channel width between 26 and 32 mm).Rolls are 2m (for one wheel). Why “Carogna”?In some Italian regions “Carogna” is the word traditionally used to indicate the mastic for tubulars… given that the mastic (like a carcass) has a very strong smell and it seems that, in ancient times, some glues were obtained from decomposing carcasses. Compared to the traditional one, our “Carogna” glues quickly, cleanly and without bad smells! The big question: Does it work for cyclocross?Carogna tape works for cyclocross. However, not surprisingly, knowing the correct bonding procedure is much more important for cyclocross than for regular road use: even if done with traditional mastic, a mediocre bonding job won't survive cyclocross racing. Due to the low inflation pressure, tubulars rely entirely on glue to stay on the rim, so the adhesion must be perfect. Here are some tips we've learned from team mechanics over years of racing cyclocross with Carogna and tubulars: AVOID SANDING THE RIM? We know this is a common practice when gluing with mastic, but masking tapes are different. The sandpaper creates small grooves in the rim channel, reducing the adhesive surface for the tape. A smooth channel provides maximum contact surface for the Carogna: it is recommended to completely remove any residual glue from the rim with Carogna Remover before applying the Carogna tape. Then clean the surfaces with a degreaser such as isopropyl alcohol or white spirit. DOES THE WIDTH OF THE CAROGNA HAVE TO BE THE CORRECT WIDTH FOR THE RIM? If the Carogna tape is much wider than the rims (for example Carogna “M”, 25mm, on a 20mm rim) there will be excess tape that is not glued correctly (as it cannot be “compressed” between the tubular and the rim). That area is a potential entry point for dirt and mud, which could make its way up to the glued-down Carogna section… not immediately, but by the third or fourth weekend of racing. It is best to cut off any excess with a razor blade before fitting the tube. Using a wider Carogna and cutting off the excess is the best way to take full advantage of the entire gluing surface. DON'T YOU PUT THE WHEELS ON IN THE COLD BEFORE THE TUBES HAVE SET? When gluing a tube with Carogna tape, the workshop temperature must be between 21°C and 38°C (70 to 100°F). At that temperature, 80% of the adhesive strength is achieved after 8 hours, 99% after 24 hours. Proper adhesion cannot occur at temperatures below 10°C/50°F. Once adhesion has occurred, use at low temperatures (down to -40°C/-40°F) is not a problem. LOW INFLATION PRESSURES MAY REQUIRE LONGER BONDING TIMES Carogna glue is pressure-activated, so it sticks very firmly when pushed against the rim by the pressure of the tubular (for this reason, for road tubulars, we recommend inflating the tubulars to maximum pressure and waiting a few hours before riding: the adhesion reaches 80% of its maximum strength after 8 hours, the optimal value of 99% after 24 hours). Since most cyclocross tubulars do not allow for a very high maximum pressure, Carogna may require more time before optimal adhesion occurs. This also depends on the finish/surface of the base webbing of the tubular. There have been reports of cyclocross tubulars not being glued after 8 hours, but becoming glued after an additional day at maximum pressure. SHOULD SURFACES BE CLEANED AND PREPARED PROPERLY? Especially when using tubulars with raw or unprotected cotton tape, pay maximum attention to cleaning the gluing surfaces. We recommend our Eau de Carogna adhesion primer for tubular tape, to ensure that adhesion is not hindered by dust or moisture. The quality of the adhesion should always be checked by completely deflating the tube and gently pushing it to one side. If the tube has not yet adhered perfectly, it is advisable to re-inflate and wait a little longer. Over time, the desired result will be achieved. Made in Italy.
