Description: Up for bids is the hardback book, Columbus “The Capital City” Newspaper Reference Book, published by The Pen and Pencil Club, Columbus, Ohio, 1915. It was printed by The Sears & Simpson Company, engraved by The Terry Engraving Company and The Bucher Engraving Company, and the photographs are by The Orr, Kiefer Company and Baker’s Art Gallery. The Pen and Pencil Club was organized in November of 1897 and was incorporated in 1905. Its membership is composed of young men from every branch of the art activity in Columbus, including commercial artists, lithographers, architects, photographers, cartoonists, scenic artists, designers and illustrators and painters. At the time of this book’s publication, the president of the organization was M.F. Bragdon, the Vice-President was C.I. Brobeck, and the Secretary Treasurer was F. L. Collins. According to the Forward, “This volume is primarily a publisher’s utility book – a work of reference wherein may be found in correct form, the basic facts regarding Columbus, its institutions, and men of note and substantial achievement, as well as younger men, whose careers are certain, yet still in the making, together with half-tones from latest photographs of the above.” Pages 14-76 feature portraits and short biographies of the leading men of Columbus, and pages 77-107 feature photographs and short descriptions of many of the businesses in Central Ohio. This 110-page book in indexed and measures approximately 9.25 x 12.25 inches. There is some slight wear around the edges of the cover.
