He was awarded the Ph.D. degree from George Peabody College (now a part of Vanderbilt University) in 1967. He was on the faculty of Southeast Missouri State University, the University of Alabama and the University of Miami before coming to Harding in 1971. He has published both scientific and religious articles. From brother Porter's obituary: Dr. Walter L. Porter, 82, of Searcy went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. He was born on Thursday, June 30, 1932 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas to the late Louis and Hazel McIntire Porter. Dr. Porter graduated from Pepperdine University with his undergraduate degree and Masters degree and then from George Peabody University, now Vanderbilt University, he obtained his Ph.D. He was a professor of Psychology at Harding University for 26 years, a member of Foothills Church of Christ and was a Naval aviator during the Korean War.
