Description: About the DesignerElizabeth Hiddleson was a prolific American crochet pattern designer. She was born on December 24, 1901. In the 1930’s several thread companies printed her designs in their pamphlets where she was not given credit for her designs. At one time she worked for Coats and Clark, and created pattern designs for various magazines. At some point in the mid 1950’s she decided to publish and market her patterns herself, and became an immediate success. She produced 59 volumes of work, placing her name”Elizabeth Hiddleson” prominent on the front of each in her spare time. She had a full time job and was taking care of her two children. Through most of the twentieth century, she designed and published thread patterns; doilies, table cloths, lampshades, children’s clothes, etc. Between 1985 and 1995 almost two hundred of her patterns were published in Decorative Crochet and Magic Crochet. Elizabeth Hiddleson’s patterns are original and unmistakably hers. Her favorite motifs are pineapple, pinwheel, and spider web. Where other designers use double crochet stitches, she uses treble, which gives her patterns a stunningly beautiful loose and open look. Most of the pattern stitches are chain, single, double and treble crochet, done one-on-one. Her patterns have written instructions and very good sharp black and white photographs, which make them easy to follow. She rarely uses a popcorn stitch or Irish rose. She uses the reverse arch to a large degree. On January 31, 2003 Elizabeth Hiddleson died at age 101 leaving crocheters an impressive legacy.
