Description: E-MU Emax I & Emax II Power Supply - Direct Replacement & Upgrade - Plug n' Play This is a direct replacement for any Emax I or Emax II synthesizer. This design was based on my personal need to replace an original failing PSU, which are prone to failure from age or excessive heat. I have included a photo of the original PSU which shows the thermal stress and aging of the pcb. It is clear from comparison that switch mode power supply design has come a long ways since the 1980s - miniaturization and integration has led to smaller and more efficient SMPS designs. I elected to use Mean Well's medical grade power supplies due to their low ripple voltage and noise, extremely long life, safety, and over-current and thermal protections. This Mean Well power supply meets or exceeds the original E-mu specifications: Original: +5v @ 2.5A +12v @ 2.0A -12v @ 0.5A Mean Well: +5v @ 4.0A +12v @ 2.0A -12v @ 0.5A Furthermore, I have designed this PCB to be a 'Plug n' Play' type. The original Emax power supply cable and connector will simply plug directly into the new power supply. There is no chance of plugging it in backwards (of course unless you force it) and the mounting holes directly line up with the holes in the case. The only modification required is to cut out the original voltage selector switch wiring - it will no longer be necessary. This supply will happily run on any line voltage between 100-240 vac. Simply screw the new PSU into place, connect the output connector, connect the ground spade, plug in the AC line connector and you are finished! Always be extra careful when working around AC mains voltages!!! Do not attempt replacement unless you feel comfortable with the process and take full responsibility for your actions.
