Description: Original pastel by American artist Leon Kelly (1901-1982), a twentieth century semi-abstract surrealist painter. This pastel painting is signed by the artist at bottom right as well as dated, not sure what it reads, best guess is 1929 which would place it to his time living in Paris. The pastel measures 18 x 13 1/2 inches, with frame and mat it is 24 x 19 5/8 inches. There is a small tear to the paper about midway up the right edge (not distracting), otherwise it appears to be in excellent condition. It is in a high end gold leaf frame with a very well made silk mat, the frame is scuffed with some losses, but looks great. Leon Kelly (1901-1982) was born in Philadelphia, of Spanish-Irish descent. He studied under Jean Auguste Adolphe, Alexandre Portinoff, Arthur Carles and Earl Horter. Horter's interest in Cubism, his private collection of paintings and books and friendship for Kelly strongly influenced the abstract paintings of Kelly's early years (1919-1925). He lived and worked in Paris 1924-1930 and thereafter had several periods of work in France, Spain, Portugal, North Africa. He died in New Jersey at the age of 81. Works by Leon Kelly can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Wadsworth Athheneum, Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Tel Aviv Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, to name a few.
