Oscar Fingal O'Flaherties Wills Wilde, who lived from 1856 – 1900, was the son of of an eminent surgeon in Dublin, Ireland. Wilde won an entrance scholarship to TRINITY COLLEGE, DUBLIN and later studied at MAGDALEN COLLEGE, OXFORD where he took top honors in classical studies. When he reached London in 1879, he was already well-known, dressing in velvet jackets, silk shirts, knee breeches, and sometimes carrying a single flower. Wilde toured the U.S. in 1881, where he gave eighty lectures and was introduced to Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Henry Ward Beecher. Wilde became one of the most popular playwrights in London, writing "The Importance of Being Earnest," "Lady Windermere's Fan," "An Ideal Husband" and his one novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray." In 1894, Wilde married Constance Lloyd, daughter of an Irish barrister, who had money of her own. They became parents to two sons. Wilde was convicted for gross indecency for consensual homosexual acts in "one of the first celebrity trials." Wilde prosecuted the Marquess of Queensberry for criminal libel. The Marquess was the father of Wilde's lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. The libel trial unearthed evidence that caused Wilde to drop charges, but Queensberry sued and Wilde was sentenced to two years' hard labor, the maximum penalty from 1895-1897. This volume includes his most famous short fiction: "The Portrait of Mr. W.H.," "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime," "The Sphinx Without a Secret," "The Canterville Ghost," "The Model Millionaire," A House of Pomegrantes," "The Young Kind, "The Birthday of the Infanta," "The Fisherman and His Soul," "The Star-Child," "The Happy Prince and Other Tales," "The Nightingale and the Rose," "A Devoted Friend," "The Selfish Giant," and "The Remarkable Rocket." 313 pages.
