Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Echinocereus rigidissimus var. rubrispinus, known as Ruby Rainbow Hedgehog, is a beautiful cactus with red-pink, very dense spines arranged in such a way that they are harmless. Its magenta flowers with white centers are quite large and appear in late spring. This columnar cactus stays smaller than the More Northerly occurring AZ Rainbow cactus Echinocereus rigidissimus, usually growing not more than nine inches tall. Often cultivated for its deep red spine color most nursery grown cactus of this variety lack any other color banding of the spines. Scatter the seeds on your soil surface, and then sprinkle a tiny bit more soil over the seeds to barely cover them. Then over this I like to cover the top surface with a thin layer of small grit ( 1mm sand grains ) . use a dark opaque color grit. Put 2 pieces of windown screen over the top of the pots held on with a rubber band or string. During germination the screen remains on the pot, you can mist through the screen and light and air passes readily. For the first several days you can mist several times daily to keep the pots moist. After a week the number of times to mist can be reduced to once or twice daily. Once the pots start to sprout you can remove them from this area and place them where there is not as much misting or humidity. You can use plastic if you can't water every day or if it’s really dry and put the screen over the plastic. Take the plastic off once germination is complete or after about 4 weeks. You can put the pots in your greenhouse, or on a sunny windowsill area, or indoors under lights.
