I buy shipping gear (envelopes and cardboard mailers to protect things), and I pack carefully so that that item I send is the one you will receive, and if the shipper still manages to f*** it up, I'll refund it anyway, because that's how securely I'll pack it. I also know that if I do "free shipping," it just means I'll just have to build the costs into the price anyway. I've settled on most items being $4 for basic shipping, which usually costs me $4-5.50 plus materials. I do offer expedited shipping, so I pay $8 plus materials or so and you pay $5-7.
