Description: This prolific, vigorous variety produces extra long gourds, up to 15 per plant. The fruit has a green skin and excellent flavor. Fruit weighs up to 1 pound and is 1.5" x 33". Fruit left to mature on the vine can be used for luffa sponges. Growing tips: 1) Do not transplant too early, as young plants could be stunned when overnight temperature below 40F. Here in Chicago Zone 5B, better growth is observed when transplanted after Memorial Day 2) Let the vines climb to chain link fence, cattle panel, arbor, trellis...etc. Best fruit yielding when maximum sun exposure is provided. Allow at least 50-100 sqft aerial space per vine. 3) Once a female flower is found, you can pinch off the rest of the "branch", to achieve best fruit size, as well as provide "bushy" growth to the main vine. Cultivation: Prepare fertile, well drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/early summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. The seed coat is hard and should be soaked in warm water for 24 hours or gently clip the seed tip to help the seed germinate. Hill planting: Form soil into a 1-ft. diameter mound 3-4' tall. Space mounds 4-6' apart. On each mound plant 1-2 seeds. Row planting: See spacing info in chart. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Hand pollination may be necessary. Train to climb a vertical support for better air circulation, straighter fruit and ease of harvest. To process for luffa sponges, allow gourds to hang on the vine until they are fully mature and the skin hardens/dries. Remove skin and seeds. Please note: Maturity, adaptability and disease tolerance may differ under your specific climate and/or growing conditions. Culinary tips: Prepare like squash or okra. Sauté, stew or stir-fry young tender gourds.
