The caption was once glued to the board but it has separated, exposing the handwritten caption by Interlandi. (I have left the caption unglued so the handwritten caption can be retained.) During the Nixon administration, Interlandi wrote many political cartoons related to the Vietnam war and tried to expose the unwavering support of right wingers for the war, no matter what the consequences. (Does this ring a current bell?) This cartoon also contains Interlandi's famous old lady in tennis shoes who was often the spokesperson or the victim in his cartoons. Frank Interlandi (March 10, 1924 to February 4, 2010) was born in Chicago of Sicilian immigrants. He was an editorial cartoonist for the Des Moines Register and the Los Angeles Times. While at the Register, he won the prize for best editorial cartoon given in 1961 by Sigma Delta Chi, the professional journalism society. A year later, he joined the Times, where he remained until 1981. For most of his time at the Times, he shared the op-ed page with Paul Conrad who joined the Times in 1964. (Interlandi and Conrad also both graduated with BA degrees in art from the University of Iowa, Conrad a few years ahead of Interlandi.)
