Dimensions: 5 1/4" Width 7 1/4" Height Image Created in 1861 "Music" or "The Kiss" by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) The image was created as a wood panel painted in1861 as part of a decorated architect's desk designed by and for architect J. B. Seddon (1827-1906). He commissioned ten painted panels depicting the Fine and Applied Arts from Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. This panel was created to depict the art of music. The cabinet depicts scenes from the life of the Medieval King René of Anjou, a notable patron of the arts, as imagined in Sir Walter Scott's novel 'Anne of Geierstein' (Edinburgh, 1829). It is known as King René's Honeymoon Cabinet. In 1861 the artist Myles Birket Foster (1825-1899) chose Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. to design the interior of his new home. The design included several collections of stained glass windows. The King René series of four panels of stained glass was devised depicting the same theme - imaginary incidents from King René's life. This particular panel was designed by Ford Madox Brown (1821-1898), one of the original partners of Morris & Co., in jewel-like colors based on Rosetti's painted panel. Dante Gabriel Rossetti was also an accomplished poet. He wrote several poems directly related to his own or classic paintings. Some link this image with a portion of his major poetic work, "The House of Life" called "The Kiss". Great Gift!!!!!
