Description: The elongated oval form is artistically fluted with a straight spout and elegantly arched ebony handle. The domed lid is topped by a finial of a carved ebony pineapple with silver leaves. I purchased this teapot in the Silver Vaults in London in 1983 because I, as a female silversmith, was intrigued by a piece made by a female silversmith the 1700's. Thus I greatly admired this piece and was thrilled to acquire it. The seller informed me much of Hester Bateman's history. She married John Bateman, a renowned silversmith, in 1732 and proceeded to work in his shop becoming known as the "Queen of Silver". She became England's best known lady silversmith as she continued to create masterpieces after her husband's death in 1760 for thirty more years. Her exceptional skill and dedication are shown in the fluted shaping of the body which reflects Georgian elegance. The boldness of the straight rising spout is distinctive of Ms Bateman's work.
