Description: *These Photos Make Great Birthday and Holiday Gifts for People Who Like This Subject Matter. They are very popular for homes, businesses, restaurants, and public places and come with detailed caption information on the back of print.* This is a historically significant black and white original by Bill Romerhaus of the Hokule’a (‘Star of Gladness’ translation) ancient Hawaiian sailing canoe replica as it enters Haleiwa Harbor during a historic trip to Haleiwa in 1997. The Polynesian Voyaging Society canoe was made with the same materials as the original canoes that were used to travel long distances in the Pacific Ocean. Pius “Mau” Pialug of Satawai Micronesia taught the ancient navigation techniques used by native sailors that involved reading ocean swells and direction, winds, and the stars to navigate the voyages. The first voyages showed that the old methods were not myths. Several other canoes were constructed since. Hawaii's Nainoa Thompson played an important role in the revival and a mentor for the voyaging society. The Hōkūle‘a is a full-scale replica of a wa‘a kaulua, a Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe. Launched in 1975 by the Polynesian Voyaging Society, is best known for her historic 1976 Hawai‘i to Tahiti, and then a three year 45,000 mile voyage around the world performed without modern navigational instruments. The primary goal of the voyage was to further support the anthropological theory of the Asiatic origin of native oceanic people, and also was to revive and perpetuate the culture, and ancient navigation methods. This original lithograph was photographed, by professional surfing, stock photographer, and master black and white printer Bill Romerhaus, of North Shore Photography, who has been shooting surfing, stock and scenics since 1967. He is one of a very few photographers in the world who specializes in hand printing original black &white waves and surfing. His most recent work has appeared in the new CBS/Eye productions "Hawaii 50",Disney/Dreamworks productions "Fright Night", Sony Pictures "Soul Surfer", CBS/Paramount Network TV series" The Cleaner" on A&E Networks, Universal Pictures "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", and Warner Brothers "The Big Bounce", and many other productions filmed on the North Shore or on Oahu,. PRINT INFORMATION: Most of our prints are sharper than many of the lower resolution samples seen here. Please be aware that many of the older original images were not high quality and may be grainy or have some visible flaws. All mounted 8x10" prints are shrink-wrapped and come with a detailed caption label on the back, (or separate with unmounted photos), with several paragraphs of interesting detailed historical and photography information. This is what makes our prints different from other sellers and very popular with buyers. Mounted prints are cropped to fit on a single 8x10" mat board and are not double matted cut-outs. Margins and borders are edges of the print, or the color of the mat. We print on long lasting lithographic, giclee professional glossy or mat paper using archival inks, or real photographic paper. Some prints are from black and white or hand colored originals, others have been ©colorized by our artist.
