Description: Jemez Pueblo Hand Painted Black & White PotCoil Built by M Boca This is a lovely piece! It is from the Jemez Pueblo, purchased in mid 1980s. 2.5 inches tall x 3 inches wide. Black and White Design painted on pot. Smooth, burnished, surface. It is in good condition, it has been stored with care. "The Jemez Pueblo is located in Central-Northern New Mexico. The pottery produced there is known for its distinctive earth-tone colors blending stone polished and matte finishes with painted and etched designs. The people of Jemez abandoned the craft of pottery making sometime in the early 18th century and relied instead on purchasing wares from other Pueblos, mostly Zia. Eventually they began to create their own work again during the 1920s and 30s, incorporating Zia's traditional designs and styles. It was not until the late 70s or 80s when Jemez pottery, with the help of noted potters such as Juanita Fragua and Mary Small, that Jemez pottery began to take on more distinctive designs and qualities that have made it very popular among collectors and enthusiasts." My parents lived in Pojoaque, New Mexico, in the mid 1980s. They lived on a ranch next door to the San Ildefonso Pueblo, and potters from the Pueblo occasionally collected cow dung to fire their kilns from the ranch. They travelled extensively and collected many interesting pieces of ceramics from Native American potters in the area. They had friends in the Zuni Pueblo, and visited there regularly. This is from a large collection of artwork, Native American artwork, camera equipment, mid century collectibles, and other interesting things that belong to my parents.
