Description: Painted in the highly recognizable style of noted Mexican artist JOSE MARIA DE SERVIN (1917-1983), a PAIR of oil and gilt on wood panels of harlequin-type or possibly matador figures. The artist, who was actually born in Michigan, was taken at the age of two months to Guadalajara, where he was to become well known as a painter, sculptor, and muralist. Early in life he was a member of Young Painters of Jalisco, and went on to assist the great Orozco on a mural at the Legislative Palace in Guadalajara. For 15 years, De Servin taught summer classes at the University of Arizona. Late in life came increasing recognition, and, posthumously, in 1984, museum recognition with a retrospective. He exhibited frequently in Mexico, but also in the United States, Central America and also Venezuela. Many works have sold at auction, the prices increasing significantly in the past 15 years, particularly for the more finished, modernist still life works and modernist figural paintings. I have owned and sold a number of the artist's works over the years (see other, more typical examples in my shop at this time) and have found them geographically widely scattered. Most commonly encountered are the paintings of little children on burlap; the fine, modernist still life works, and works on wood with gilt such as this pair are quite rare and increasingly desirable. Each panel measures 24 1/2" by 7 1/2". CONDITION: evenly distributed, honest wear, including missing paint, as illustrated. It does not in my opinion detract from the overall impact of the art. Study the images. SEE OTHER WORKS BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP including a large, extremely fine and important example.
