Description: This is a large and quite rare 19th century sign or plaque/ flag holder. It is oval shaped with a central form of a shield and the colors of the French flag. This piece would likely hang on court houses or municipal buildings throughout France. At the top of the shield you will see the beautiful Marianne of France. She has been the symbol of liberty and freedom in France since the French Revolution. While she has been depicted in many ways over time, the way she is depicted here with a star was from 1871 through 1879. The plaque would normally hold several flags which slide into metal flag holders on the back of the plaque. When the sign is completely dressed, it would be surrounded in flags. The plaque has the words Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Today this would be a wonderful conversation piece in a French restaurant or even house or garden. If you are a Francophile or if you love everything French, what better piece to have in your collection than this one! Dimensions are as follows: 41 inches high x 34 inches wide x 6 inches deep.
