The soft head has very dark green leaves that are slightly crumpled and thicker than most with a crisp texture and a creamy yellow inside that forms a small 6in rosette. Soft, buttery-textured loosely held leaves enclose a crisp, juicy, sweet-tasting mild buttery flavored center. How to plant: Propagate by seed Germination temperature: Below F – Will germinate at soil temperatures as low as 60 F. Days to emergence: 7-10Seed can be saved 3 years if stored properly Transplanting 3–4 weeks before garden planting, sow in cell trays barely covered with vermiculite or fine soil. If necessary, utilize shade and frequent misting to keep trays cooled below 75 F during germination. Young plants properly hardened at least 3–5 days before planting can survive temperatures as low as 20 F. Transplant 10–12" apart in rows 15–18" apart, and mini heads (Tom Thumb) as close as 6" in a grid. Can be direct seeded can germinate well in soils as low as 40F but often poorly above 75 F. Sow 4–6 seeds/inch in rows at least 2" apart. Cover lightly to 1/8" and firm gently. Dry soil must be watered to ensure coolness, moisture, and uniform germination.
