Description: Winner receives an original oil painting on canvas by well listed American artist Charles Wilson Knapp (1822-1900). The painting is coming for sale fresh from a prominent upstate New York estate. The painting depicts an Impressionist New England landscape of what is probably the Catskill or Berkshire Mountains. The painting is unsigned but we are certain it is by the hand of the artist. The painting is in exquisite condition, just coming back from a full professional restoration which included a re-lining. The fancy gallery frame is also in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, losses, or repairs. The frame does have a placard that reads "Charles W. Knapp" seen magnified in picture 5. This painting is an absolute gem and ready for hanging as-is. The frame measures roughly 21.5" x 17.5", with the image measuring roughly 16" x 12". Below is some information about the artist, whose auction results include sales up to $24,000. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have prior to bidding or making an offer. Thank you for checking out our listing. Charles Wilson Knapp (1822-1900) was a noted landscape artist of great ability. He worked primarily in Pennsylvania, New York State, New Jersey, the Susquehanna River Valley, the area around the Delaware Water Gap, and the Berkshire Mountains. He especially enjoyed painting the hills and rocky valleys of the Susquehanna River area, a favorite region for generations of artists prior to Knapp and his contemporaries. While the area was becoming increasingly urbanized, Knapp was one of several artists who continued to set forth on canvas the serenity and calm of the place which had initially drawn them there. These landscapes were exhibited at the National Academy of Design soon after they were completed.Knapp shows the beauty of nature in his paintings, whether in the vastness of the landscapes or in their detail. He was accomplished at achieving the effects of light and atmosphere. His work follows in the tradition of mid-19th century painting and of the Hudson River School. In 1880 his address was 1510 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA. Charles Knapp died in his native Philadelphia on May 15, 1900.His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Albany Institute of History and Art, the Robert Hull Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT, and the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. All of our items have been stored in a temperature controlled environment with no pets or smoking allowed.
